Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) has announced a series of updates to the Train the Trainer Award (6N3325), one of Ireland's most widely held further education qualifications. The updates, which take effect from September 2025, affect assessment requirements, the recognition of prior learning (RPL) pathway, and the minimum contact hours required for award completion.
What Is Changing?
The most significant change concerns the assessment portfolio requirements. Under the updated specification, candidates must now submit a minimum of three assessed training delivery sessions rather than the previous minimum of two. The sessions must demonstrate competence across different training contexts — for example, a combination of face-to-face and online delivery — reflecting the reality of modern training practice.
Other changes include:
- The training needs analysis component has been expanded to require candidates to demonstrate competence in both individual and organisational needs analysis
- The assessment and evaluation component now includes a requirement to demonstrate competence in digital assessment tools
- The RPL pathway has been updated to require a structured professional discussion with an assessor in addition to the portfolio submission
- Minimum contact hours have been increased from 30 to 36 hours, reflecting the expanded assessment requirements
Why the Updates Were Made
QQI's review of the award was prompted by feedback from employers and training providers that graduates of the existing award were sometimes insufficiently prepared for the realities of modern training delivery, particularly in relation to online and blended learning environments. The updated specification addresses these gaps while maintaining the award's accessibility and relevance across all sectors.
What Existing Holders Need to Know
Existing holders of the QQI Level 6 Train the Trainer Award are not required to retake the qualification under the updated specification. However, trainers who wish to demonstrate currency with the updated requirements may wish to undertake CPD activities covering the new content areas.
For those seeking to complete the award before the September 2025 changes take effect, Abertay Training is running accelerated cohorts through the current specification. Details are also available at TrainTheTrainer.biz.
